ADUs & additions
A second-story addition: questions to ask before construction
Structure, occupied-home logistics, and trade handoffs deserve attention early.

Begin with the existing building
Gather available plans and photos. An appropriately licensed design professional must evaluate the existing structure and proposed changes; an online answer cannot establish that a building can support an additional story.
Discuss the construction sequence
Ask how the team will handle roof removal, temporary weather protection, access, utility interruptions, and occupied areas. Discuss whether you will remain in the home and what milestones affect that choice.
Compare the full project scope
Clarify stairs, building systems, finishes, and work in existing rooms. Compare proposals against the same drawings and list exclusions. Budget and schedule should account for the defined project rather than added floor area alone.
Keep decisions documented
Use a written process for scope changes and approvals. Track responsibilities, inspection milestones, and punch-list work. Start a conversation with the property location, project description, and any available plans.
General guidance, not a property-specific assessment. Confirm technical and jurisdiction-specific requirements with the appropriate licensed professionals.
